3D Scanning Case of Cavalry Statue

Holon3d engineers used the three-dimensional photogrammetry system HL-3DP + three-dimensional scanner α7000 to reversely mold the cavalry statue, recreating the heroic spirit of the "Genghis Khan Ten Thousand Guards" of the Mongol Empire in the 13th century.

Practical problems

1. It takes 1-2 months for the engraver to engrave a Mongolian cavalry. The time-consuming and laborious follow-up moulding and casting, the project simply cannot be completed as scheduled.

2. The cavalry statue is huge, the surface is complex, and the pattern is dense and small. The scanning equipment must not only have the ability to scan large objects, but also ensure its scanning speed.

Holon solutions

When it comes to Genghis Khan, many people immediately think of the Mongolian cavalry that swept across Asia and Europe in the 13th century. They conquered a vast territory, reaching the Black Sea coast to the west, encompassing almost the entire East Asia, and establishing the famous Mongolian empire in world history. In July of this year, a customer in Erlianhot, Inner Mongolia, wanted to cooperate with a company in Mongolia to build a park with the theme of Mongolian horsemen, called the Genghis Khan Ten Thousand Guards Theme Park. Thousands of giant bronze cavalry statues will be placed in the park. With their mighty and heroic figures and large numbers, the client hopes to apply for the Guinness World Records after the completion of the park.

These plaster statues were hand-carved by well-known Mongolian artists. The simple, primitive and rough carving techniques reflect the unique ethnic characteristics and aesthetic concepts of Mongolian art culture. At the same time, the huge size of 3.4 meters high and 3.7 meters long makes these cavalry statues look more brave and aggressive. Due to the large number of statues and the short construction period, customers need to use reverse design to mold the statues. However, the large size, complex structure, and dense patterns on the armor of the cavalry statues make scanning difficult.

Faced with these problems, Hualang engineers recommend the use of 3D scanning of super large workpieces: α7000+ 3D photogrammetric system HL-3DP

1. Preliminary preparations

Marking points: Positioning and splicing the acquired data in the scanning software.

Paste code points: enable the 3D photogrammetry system to obtain the 3D coordinates on the surface of the cavalry statue.

2. Three-dimensional photogrammetry

Holon3d engineers first used the three-dimensional photogrammetry system (HL-3DP) to take multiple images of the cavalry statue. Through the three-dimensional ranging method, the HOLON3DP software automatically combined these images and after calculation, the center of each coded point can be obtained. 3D coordinates, calculate the 3D coordinates of key information points on the surface of the object.

3. Three-dimensional scanning

α7000 is a professional optical instrument used to obtain three-dimensional data of large objects. It has the following characteristics: 1200*900 ultra-large format, can quickly complete three-dimensional scanning of large objects; with industrial-grade scanning accuracy, up to ±0.0125mm/m; Hua Lang's self-developed scanning software has stronger stability.

4. Data processing

After quickly scanning the cavalry statue, import the point cloud data into the reverse design software Geomagic Studio for processing, which can generate triangle mesh surface data in STL format. After the post-processing in mainstream design software such as Pro/E and UG, it can speed up the development of the cavalry statue mold.
